The association tailored solely to the needs of shiatsu practitioners

The Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia is not for profit.  We consist of registered members who comply with professional healthcare standards which include Insurance, First Aid and ongoing professional development.  We also welcome Friends and Associates who do not meet the specific requirement for full registration but who wish to stay up to date with Shiatsu-related news and be part of our community.

As part of your membership STAA negotiates with the Private Health Insurance Association and individual providers to have your private health rebate reinstated.  Regular updates on the progress of these negotiations are featured in our industry newsletter Tsubo.


Registered Member$280 / annum

Registered membership level is for people with a qualification wishing to practise professionally in Australia and offer private health rebates.  As a registered member of STAA you have access to the STAA Mentoring Programme (a highly regarded professional support and education program) to help you develop and maintain your business.


Associate Member$140 / annum

Associate membership level enables you to stay up to date with news, events and developments in the field. Associate membership is for practitioners in aligned modalities who could benefit from participating in STAA events and being involved in our community.

Friend Membership$65 / annum

Friend membership level is for those interested in Shiatsu who wish to be on our mailing list.  This means you will be informed about STAA events and be able to advertise in our Tsubo newsletter, receive special rates to advertise in Pointers and on our website.

Student MembershipFree

Student membership level is for those currently enrolled in formal Shiatsu Training who wish to be involved in STAA events and keep up with our news.  Once graduated a student upgrades to a Registered or Associate Membership Level.

Membership renews each year on the 1st February

If you are on leave from your practice at renewal time (taking parental, caring, medical leave or sabbatical) please contact us to pause your membership for up to one year.

Lapsed Members


If you were previously a member of STAA and have let your membership lapse:


Before a year has passed, if for example you have taken parental leave, to reinstate membership you will need to:

  • Pay a membership fee of $280 
  • Show 10 CPE points
  • Provide evidence of Diploma Qualification, Current First Aid Certification and Insurance if requested
  • No refund of partial membership prior to leave taken
One to five years lapsed membership:
  • Pay $280 membership fee + $100 Admin fee
  • Provide a copy of Diploma Qualification
  • Enrol in 2 years of the STAA Mentoring Programme
Five+ years lapsed membership:
  • You will need to enquire about a diploma upgrade with a Registered Training Organisation.
  • The Australian Shiatsu College currently offers a Shiatsu Diploma Upgrade

  • Registered members can participate in National Council and be elected as one of the 4 National Council Officials - President, VP, Treasurer or Secretary.

Requirements:


Registered members must be fully paid and supply current 

  • Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies HLT50207, HLT50212 or HLT50215
  • Basic emergency life support (HLTAID010) and First Aid (HLTAID011) renewed every 3 years
  • CPR (HLTAID009) updated annually 
  • Professional indemnity insurance to the value of $2 million including public liability to the value of $20 million
  • 20 points of Continued Professional Education annually

to maintain their private health provider numbers and Find-a-Therapist listing.


Associate Member

  • Receive members discount for STAA events.

Associate members are not listed on our Find-a-Therapist page.

Members are required to sign a declaration that they will comply with the Code.


Established in 1987, the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia Inc. (STAA) is the National Peak Body representing Shiatsu Therapists.

STAA is dedicated to expanding the awareness and recognition of Shiatsu in the Australian community and its integration into the healthcare system.
