Professional Standards

All Registered members meet the following Professional Standards:

  • Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies
    HLT50207, HLT50212 or HLT50215 - includes a minimum 200 hours in person supervised clinical training.
  • Basic emergency life support (HLTAID010) and First Aid (HLTAID011) renewed every 3 years.
  • CPR (HLTAID009) recommended to be refreshed annually.
  • Professional indemnity insurance to the value of $2 million
  • Public liability insurance to the value of $20 million
  • 20 points of Continued Professional Education annually

- from the public regarding Registered members

- from Association members, contractors and the public

Code of Conduct

All Registered members of STAA must abide by the Code of Ethics

The National Code of Conduct for unregistered health professionals is in place in most states of Australia.

This National Code applies to shiatsu therapists.

  • Patient records
  • Advertising
  • Stationery
  • Breach of Code of Standards and Ethics.

Members are required to sign a declaration that they will abide by the Code of Ethics.


Established in 1987, the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia Inc. (STAA) is the National Peak Body representing Shiatsu Therapists.

STAA is dedicated to expanding the awareness and recognition of Shiatsu in the Australian community and its integration into the healthcare system.
